Apollo 11 placed the first humans on the Moon. Neil Armstrong and Edwin (Buzz) Aldrin stepped on to the Moon’s surface on July 20, 1969. The two astronauts spent about 2.5 hours on the Moon collecting samples of surface material and documenting their efforts. The crew returned safely to Earth on July 24, 1969.
